Queensland gelding Whiskey Allround gets the chance to book his place in next month’s $3.5 million 2013 Golden Slipper (1200m) when he contests the Group 2 2013 Todman Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill on Saturday.
The Tony Gollan-trained gelding has already collected $152,000 in prizemoney, likely to be enough to gain a start in the field, but is no Slipper certainty.
The problem is, Whiskey Allround is not nominated, meaning connections have to pay a $150,000 late entry to gain a start in the world’s richest two-year-old race.
Gollan said after his tough second in the Silver Slipper earlier this month the youngster had been set on a Slipper path since but needs to perform this weekend to warrant the late entry.
The Brisbane trainer was thrilled with his Silver Slipper performance where he bombed the start before fighting back to finish less than a half-length behind winner Sweet Idea.
“It was a huge run because normally he is a brilliant beginner and would have been up outside Sweet Idea,” Gollan said.
“It was so daunting when he got back so far. I had pretty much given up hope after the first 100m or so.”
Gollan is confident the son of All Bar One can improve considerably from the first-up run and believes he is a genuine top-grade performer in the making.
Whiskey Allround is one of 13 horses nominated for the Todman Stakes on Saturday which is restricted to colts and geldings.
The main dangers to victory appear to be David Payne’s colt Criterion who won the Black Opal Stakes in Canberra on Sunday and Silver Slipper third Charlie Boy.
The early Golden Slipper market is now available and great odds can be found at bookmaker.com.au.
