Canterbury Stakes 2013 – 11 Nominations Taken

Nominations have been announced for the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes, which is set to run at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse this Saturday March 23, 2013.

A total of 11 horses have nominated for the 2013 Canterbury Stakes, including More Joyous.

More Joyous will be having her first autumn race start in Saturday’s race, having won her two barrier trials last month.

The More Than Ready mare has won 21 of her 30 race starts in total and has earned close to $4.5 million in prize money during her horse racing career.

Trained by Gai Waterhouse, More Joyous will be looking to reclaim her winning form after placing 11th of 14 runners in her most recent start in the $3 million Cox Plate last spring.

More Joyous is on her way towards defending her title in the Group 1 Doncaster Mile on April 20, 2013.

Also included in the 2013 Canterbury Stakes nominations is stable mate Pierro.

Pierro has won nine of his 11 career runs and has earned more than $3.67 million in prize money.

The Lonhro colt will be having his second autumn start in the 2013 Canterbury Stakes after winning the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes first-up.

The 2013 Canterbury Stakes will also see the return of Rain Affair, who has been absent from the racing scene since October last year.

Trainer Joe Pride is confident that Rain Affair has what it takes to win the 2013 Canterbury Stakes, however, understands it will be a hard task against the star-studded field.

“It is a tough race to start off in,” Pride said.

“But I’m very happy with him and his barrier trials have been just what I wanted to see.”

Solzhenitsyn, Mid Summer Music and Secret Admirer will also grace the track for the 2013 Canterbury Stakes.
