It’s A Dundeel Wins 2013 Randwick Guineas

The addition of blinkers worked superbly for New Zealand colt It’s A Dundeel who won the Group 1 $500,000 2013 Randwick Guineas (1600m) at Warwick Farm today.

The Murray Baker-trained three-year-old has traditionally settled at the back of the field but the gear change saw him jump keenly and take a position in the middle of the pack.

But it didn’t stifle his stunning finish as he repeated his Spring Champion Stakes performance from the spring to run down Gai Waterhouse-trained colt Proisir.

It’s A Dundeel has already proven he can stay but he added another string to his bow with a Group 1 win over 1600m and looks set for a big autumn.

“He’s not a big horse but he’s starting to furnish now,”  Baker said.

“He made that long sustained run today and I thought once he got to the front they won’t pull him back.”

Baker will resist the urge to throw the son of High Chaparral into open company, with the rest of his campaign likely to see him contest the Group 1 2013 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) and the Group 1 2013 Australian Derby (2400m).

James McDonald has ridden the dual Group 1 winner in all nine of his career starts and was delighted with today’s result.

“He stamped himself as a top class horse…those blinkers they worked a treat,” McDonald said.

“In the last furlong he was doing it easy. There’s plenty up the sleeve as well.

“I said at the start of his prep he’s going to win races over a mile this prep. He feels so much stronger.”

Favourite Rebel Dane jumped well from the inside barrier and assumed a good position in running but faded in the straight to finish fourth.

The Randwick Guineas may be over but you haven’t seen the last of this crop as many will go on contest further Group 1 races throughout the autumn!
