Top Sydney jockey Hugh Bowman has benefited from the suspension of Michael Rodd at Moonee Valley on Friday night, picking up the prized ride of Villa Verde in next Saturday’s Group 2 2013 Reisling Stakes (1200m).
The Reisling Stakes will be Villa Verde’s first start in Sydney and her only lead-up to the 2013 Golden Slipper.
Rodd’s suspension ends on March 29 and he is expected to retain the ride for next month’s Slipper on a horse that is one of the top fancies.
The Shaun Dwyer-trained filly burst into Slipper contention in the spring when winning back-to-back Listed races by dominant margins.
She hasn’t raced since November but had a jump-out in Bendigo earlier in the week, leaving Rodd excited about her Slipper hopes.
“I think she has improved and she feels a lot stronger,” Rodd said on Wednesday.
“She had a very good blow so there is still improvement there. She looks like she is on track.”
The daughter of Not A Single Doubt is second favourite in the Golden Slipper market behind Gai Waterhouse’s filly Overreach.
Rodd’s suspension arose from his ride on Alister Clark Stakes third placegetter Sheer Talent where stewards said he allowed his mount to shift in abruptly approaching the home turn.
Rodd pleaded guilty to the suspension which sees him suspended for 14 meetings.
Also suspended from Moonee Valley on Friday night was Dale Smith who copped an 11-meeting ban for careless riding on Abell Stakes winner Loveyamadly.
