2013 Sydney Cup Possibility for Tremec – Randwick City Stakes Results

Tremec emerged as a potential 2013 Sydney Cup (3200m) contender with a fighting win in the Listed 2013 Randwick City Stakes (2200m) at Warwick Farm today.

The lightly-raced gelding held off the more experienced Permit by the narrowest of margins in what was a tight battle down the short Warwick Farm straight.

A protest was lodged from the Permit camp who suggested Tremec moved out on the home turn and interfered with the Chris Waller-trained import but it was quickly dismissed.

Tremec jockey Christian Reith said the four-year-old has plenty of upside and could possibly tackle the Group 1 $500,000 Sydney Cup at Randwick on April 27.

“The further he gets better, he might be a lightweight Sydney Cup chance,” Reith said.

“He needs an unimpeded run when he wants to accelerate and he showed that today.

“He was able to get rolling from the 700m and he just keeps building, building, building momentum.”

The Patinack-owned galloper is still learning his craft, having won five of 14 starts, with today his debut at stakes level.

Also signalling Sydney Cup intentions was Permit who arrived in the race on the back of a fifth in the Parramatta Cup.

Permit started as favourite in last year’s Sydney Cup but had to be eased down mid-race after going amiss.
