Challenge Stakes 2013 – Betting Update and Tips

Mighty sprinter Hay List returns this weekend in the Group 2 2013 Challenge Stakes which is sure to attract extra interest to the Randwick Guineas day program at Warwick Farm on Saturday.

The big gelding will be racing for the first time in nearly 12 months but has still opened a short favourite at $2.70.

Whether or not he can come back near his best won’t be known until Saturday but he will have to produce a big showing to beat some quality rivals.

Second favourite is Gerald Ryan’s classy filly Snitzerland ($4.60) who is slightly ahead of Tiger Tees ($5.50).

No other runner falls under double figures but there are some quality horses at big prices including Oakleigh Plate winner Mrs Onassis ($11), Howmuchdoyouloveme ($13), Golden Archer ($15), Decision Time ($17), Temple Of Boom ($19) and Atomic Force ($26).

Not sure who to back in this quality field of sprinters? Having a hard time lining up the form? Keep reading as the Races.com.au team are here to bring you our very best selections.

The Winner

#1 Hay List $2.70

If trainer John McNair believes Hay List is fit enough to line up on Saturday then it’s tough to bet against him.

It may have been nearly a year since his last hit-out but he is a superstar.

Fifteen wins from 23 starts, three Group 1 wins and more than $2.5 million in prizemoney. His last two first-up runs he has finished second behind Black Caviar.

Showed enough in a track gallop at Warwick Farm on Saturday to suggest he still has what it takes to succeed as a racehorse.

The Placings

#5 Tiger Tees $5.50 and #6 Golden Archer $15

Tiger Tees has shown plenty of talent throughout his career and looks set for a big preparation this time in.

Trialled impressively at Rosehill earlier this month and has an outstanding fresh record.

In the spring he beat Mrs Onassis by three lengths first-up to win the Concorde Stakes and she has since won at Group 1 level.

Golden Archer goes from taking on one superstar to another but we think he showed enough in his third to Black Caviar in the Lightning to suggest he can be in the mix here.
