Bowman Backs Doncaster Hope in Randwick Guineas 2013

This weekend ace Sydney jockey Hugh Bowman vies for his second Group 1 win of the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival, confident his Doncaster Mile-bound mount Proisir is the one to beat in the 2013 Randwick Guineas.

Bowman secured back-to-back Chipping Norton Stakes in the opening elite level of the Sydney carnival aboard Shoot Out last Saturday and this week his attention turns to the $500,000 Group 1 Royal Randwick Guineas (1600m) at Warwick Farm where he will partner with the Gai Waterhouse-trained Proisir.

Six length winner of the Group 3 Newcastle Spring Stakes last season before going down as the beaten odds-on favourite behind fellow Randwick Guineas rival It’s A Dundeel in the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes, Proisir currently pays $3.40 as the second pick for Saturday’s showdown.

Bowman first rode the promising Choisir colt for their first-up third behind star stablemate Pierro and this weekend’s Randwick Guineas betting favourite Rebel Dane in the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill.

That run was on a Heavy (9) and with a likely firmer track this time round Bowman is backing Proisir to be more competitive as they get up to what he believes is their pet distance.

“I think he will be better on top of the ground,” he said.

“He felt good at Rosehill but the conditions just voided his acceleration, which is his main weapon. I think he will be a different horse on Saturday.

“The way he won the Spring Stakes in the spring, he looks like a mile is the right trip.

“He had a real turn of foot that day and he is fitter going into this for his run in the Hobartville Stakes.”

The youngster’s big target this time in is the $2 million Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) at Royal Randwick on April 20, Proisir currently paying $11 as the third favourite behind Pierro ($6.50) and All Too Hard ($8) – both absent from the Randwick Guineas 2013 – in the futures Doncaster odds.

Bowman however is solely focused on winning the Guineas as he won’t be able to ride Proisir in the Doncaster with their light weight as a three-year-old.

“His main goal is the Doncaster, where he won’t get my weight, so I just have to win this mile,” Bowman said.
