Alister Clark Stakes 2013 – Betting Odds and Tips

A small but talented field of three-year-old stayers will contest the Group 2 2013 Alister Clark Stakes (2040m) at Moonee Valley on Friday night and if the market is to be believed it should be an open affair.

There is little separating the top three favourites in the field, with Australian Guineas fourth placegetter Hvasstan ($3.20) narrowly ahead of Philippi ($3.30) and Sheer Talent ($3.80).

All horses put in strong races in the Australian Guineas as did David Hayes-trained gelding Bass Strait ($5) who was fifth.

Last-start winner Gerontius is a $13 chance, slightly ahead of stablemate Green Roller ($18).

The long-shot outsider in the field is Soldier’s March ($151) who arrives on the back of minor placings at Kyneton and Traralgon.

Many of these horses are on trial for bigger things to come at the Sydney Autumn Carnival so expect to see a quality race.

Not sure how the form stacks up with these lightly-raced gallopers? Need some help working out your selections? Below are the best tips from the experts at Races.com.au.

The Winner

#3 Philippi $3.30

This Michael Kent-trained colt looks a stayer with upside and looks well placed here.

Was solid despite getting held up to finish sixth in the Australian Guineas and gets up to a distance that is likely to be more suitable.

Won at stakes level over 1800m when powering through the line in the Listed UCI Stakes and also tasted success at Moonee Valley the start before.

The Placings

#1 Hvasstan $3.20 and #4 Bass Strait $5.00

The Hvasstan team have been happy to talk up his chances ahead of the Alister Clark Stakes, believing he is primed here.

Produced the run of the race to come from the back and finish fourth in the Australian Guineas and an Victoria Derby fourth suggests the 2000m is no problem.

Bass Strait was fifth in both the CS Hayes Stakes and Australian Guineas but should improve with the increased trip here.

Looks a genuine stayer in the making and should run well on the road to the Australian Derby.
