The field for the Randwick Guineas 2013 at Warwick Farm this weekend is down to 12 with the early withdrawal of one of the roughie chances in the John O’Shea-trained Ashokan.
More Than Ready colt Ashokan was rated around $41 in the early markets for Saturday’s $500,000 Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) making them one of the long shots in the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival feature.
A winner of just one of their 11 career starts to date when beating home the Gai Waterhouse-trained Raceway in the Group 3 Skyline Stakes (1200m) at just their second career run last autumn, Ashokan was last seen running a good second to Complicate in the Listed Canberra Guineas (1400m) last Sunday.
That effort showed nice progression from their sixth to Pierro in the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) in the wet at Rosehill eight days earlier which is the race the major Randwick Guineas players have come via this year.
With the Randwick Guineas to have been their third run in as many weeks however connections have decided not to run them especially after they drew barrier 13 of 13.
Favourite in the Randwick Guineas odds meanwhile is still Hobartville Stakes runner-up Rebel Dane who has drawn the rails.
Odds on Gary Portelli’s consistent Royal Sovereign Stakes winner who sees the mile for the first time here however have eased out slightly from $2.80 back to their opening price of $2.90.
There have been zero changes in the rest of the Randwick Guineas betting markets with the other fancies all staying steady including Waterhouse’s progressive Proisir ($3.40), Spring Champion Stakes winner It’s A Dundeel ($6.50) and the Chris Waller-trained duo of Group 1 winning Kiwis Tougher Than Ever ($10) and Sacred Falls ($11).
Just outside the top five is then last start Australian Guineas winner Ferlax who at $15 represents excellent value as they seek their fifth win from as many career starts this weekend with Brett Prebble to ride.
While confident in the ability of his Pentire colt who handled the massive step up in class from a restricted race at Sale to the Group 1 Australian Guineas at Flemington last start, Ferlax’s trainer Jim Conlan is a little worried the predicted rain in Sydney could ruin their chances of back-to-back elite level victories.
