Chris Waller’s best chance of securing an elusive Golden Slipper victory is not even nominated for the world’s richest two-year-olds’ race, however that could change should Calming Influence win the 2013 Sweet Embrace Stakes this weekend.
Commands filly Calming Influence was not originally nominated for the $3.5 million Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) to run at Rosehill Gardens on April 6.
She gets the chance to convince connections to pay the hefty late entry to get her into the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival classic with a victory in this Saturday’s $125,000 Group 2 Sweet Embrace Stakes (1200m) at Warwick Farm Racecourse.
After a successful debut win over Dream Forward over 1100m at Rosehill in January, Calming Influence ran at Warwick Farm last start on February 23 finishing three lengths runner-up behind Good Job Bro in a 1200m handicap run on a Heavy (9) track.
Multiple Sydney Trainers Premiership winner Waller is confident she will improve on that run in the Sweet Embrace when she goes back to fillies-only company.
Calming Influence currently occupies the second line of Sweet Embrace Stakes betting at a quote of $3.70 after drawing nicely in barrier two with her last-start hoop Jim Cassidy to ride.
She trails only the Clarry Conners-trained Assail ($2.90) who races for the first time since her Magic Millions Wyong Classic win after which she was found to be suffering from a hoof infection.
Assail is also 2013 Golden Slipper-bound and is the third favourite in the latest markets at $15.
Not being nominated Calming Influence isn’t listed in the Golden Slipper futures odds however she is sure to be added if she upsets Assail on Saturday and Waller indicates an intention to pay the late entry.
Waller has saddled up just one two-year-old in a Golden Slipper field with Jade Marauder finishing second last when 15th to Pierro last year.
He also had Fast And Sexy in the 2011 field but they were scratched at the gates.
“The Slipper is a race I’d definitely love to win, but I love a mature miler,” Waller said when speaking of not pushing the juveniles in his stable to peak too early.
“If they’re good enough, they’ll win at two.
“Calming Influence is a horse who has done it all herself, and we haven’t pushed her. I don’t need to push her to get there, and that’s my mentality.
“If she gets there she’ll do it naturally and be peaking for her grand final.”
