After suffering an elevated temperature last week the Golden Slipper 2013 campaign of Peter Snowden’s young colt Safeguard is now under a cloud of doubt with their trainer racing to get them fit in time for a shot at the world’s richest juveniles’ showdown.
A son of Exceed And Excel Safeguard entered calculations for the $3.5 million Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill Gardens on April 6 with a nice two length win at Flemington on debut last December.
They looked on track for a Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival return after a winning barrier trial at Randwick in late February but are now behind the eight-ball after a spike in their temperature last week saw them miss some crucial work.
“He had a temp last Monday week and it has taken him probably a full week to recover from it,” Snowden told Sky Sports Radio on Thursday.
“Naturally a week’s work at this time of the year is vital and he’s going to be pushing it to make the Slipper.”
Many Aussie bookies are still taking no chances with Safeguard despite their trainer’s concerns with the colt still one of the $16 fourth favourites in the Golden Slipper odds which are led by Gai Waterhouse’s emphatic Widden Stakes winner Overreach ($4.40).
Among Snowden’s other Golden Slipper hopes for 2013 is Guelph paying $26 to take out the classic.
Also by Exceed And Excel this well-credentialed filly has had four career starts for two wins so far.
Her biggest turf triumph was the Group 3 BD Fillies Prelude (1100m) at Caulfield last month but she could only manage to finish over six lengths away ninth to Miracles Of Life when jumping one of the top fancies for the $1 million Blue Diamond Stakes last time out on February 23.
Guelph will take her next step towards the Golden Slipper when she trials at Randwick Friday week.
“It will be a nice hit-out for her two weeks before the Slipper and she will go straight into the race from there,” Snowden said.
