Rebel Dane Heads 2013 Randwick Guineas Odds

Gary Portelli’s flying Royal Sovereign Stakes winner Rebel Dane has opened the pronounced favourite to win this Saturday’s Randwick Guineas 2013 at Warwick Farm, the gun youngster vying for their fifth win from five starts.

The California Dane colt, one of 13 three-year-olds engaged in this year’s $500,000 Group 1 Royal Randwick Guineas (1600m), won their opening four career starts including a smart first-up victory in the Group 2 Royal Sovereign Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill last month.

They suffered their first loss last time out but loss few fans when going down by the narrowest of margins to triple Group 1 champ Pierro in the mud for the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m).

Getting up to a mile on hopefully firmer ground and having drawn on the rails with barrier one Rebel Dane looks the one to beat in the Randwick Guineas at their home track, especially in the absence of Pierro and All Too Hard.

“He’s good, the best I’ve had him going to the races,” Portelli said.

“He hasn’t missed a beat. He’s 110 percent. Right at his peak and I think the race being at his home track is a plus.

“It’s rare that Warwick Farm-trained horses don’t run well at home.”

The bookies agree and Rebel Dane tops the early Randwick Guineas odds at a quote of $2.80.

There are then only two other hopefuls under double figures in the Randwick Guineas betting markets with:

  • #3 Proisir ($3.40) – Gai Waterhouse’s six length Spring Stakes winner last season resumed with a third in the Hobartville Stakes which will they take lots of improvement from, will also like gate three as opposed to gate 10 then
  • #1 It’s A Dundeel ($6.50) – Lots to like about Murray Baker’s New Zealand raider, the High Chaparral colt a Group 1 winner at Randwick in the Spring Champion Stakes last year, fourth in the Hobartville with the mile to suit

Other longer priced chances with genuine claims of an upset in the big one in Sydney this weekend then include the likes of the Chris Waller-trained duo of Tougher Than Ever ($10) and Sacred Falls ($11) who are both Group 1 winners back in NZ, and Jim Conlan’s Australian Guineas winner Ferlax who pays a juicy $15 despite winning at elite level last time out as a $16 chance in their fourth victory from as many starts.
