Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Chris Waller’s progressive stayer Marden has opened top of the markets for the first on Randwick Guineas Day at Warwick Farm this weekend leading the markets for the Randwick City Stakes 2013 despite not having raced against Group company before.
Getting things at the latest Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival meeting underway at 12:50pm (AEST) on Saturday, the $100,000 Listed Randwick City Stakes (2200m) features eight hopefuls including three from Waller’s stables.
The best fancied of Waller’s trio is imported Danehill Dancer gelding Marden who has their first black-type assignment here at career start number 26.
Paying $3.30 in the latest Randwick City Stakes betting markets the five-year-old comes off a number of good runs in Sydney having run top three in their past six starts including their last start victory at this track and distance on February 23.
The next best fancied of Waller’s hopes in the race is then Sydney Cup-bound Permit at $4.20 who will wear the No. 1 saddlecloth.
Drawn ideally in gate three with Hugh Bowman to ride the Dansili six-year-old will carry the 59kg topweight in the Randwick City Stakes as they look to improve on their last start fifth to Pelicano with the same weight in the Listed Parramatta Cup (2000m) in the wet at Rosehill at the start of the month.
Permit is heading towards a run in the $500,000 Group 1 Sydney Cup over the two miles at Randwick on April 27, a race they failed to finish last year.
Waller will also saddle up his 2011 Sydney Cup winner Stand To Gain who is the $51 roughie for the Randwick City Stakes.
Following Marden and Permit meanwhile are then three other single figure chances with:
- #4 Kaypers ($4.50) – Greg Bennett-trained five-year-old coming off two good runs at Rosehill most recently finishing second in the Parramatta Cup which they can improve on getting up in distance on a firmer track
- #8 Tremec ($4.60) – Recent Canterbury and Wyong winner, last seen finishing second to Award Season over this track and distance in a BM80 last Saturday, on a short back-up but conditions are right for this progressive Zabeel four-year-old
- #7 Now I See ($7.50) – Tracey Bartley-trained four-year-old was second to the favourite here Marden on February 23 over the 2200m at Warwick Farm, ridden by Jim Cassidy from gate two then and has Kerrin McEvoy guiding them from the inside gate for this one on the 54kg minimum
