He hasn’t raced in nearly a year but the bookies aren’t taking any chances with Hay List ahead of his return in the Group 2 2013 Challenge Stakes (1000m) at Warwick Farm on Saturday.
The seven-year-old is currently a $2.70 favourite to come back a winner and improve his already remarkable record.
Despite living in Black Caviar’s shadow for much of his career, Hay List has still managed to amass 15 wins from 23 starts and collect prizemoney in excess of $2.5 million.
Hay List is one from one in the Challenge Stakes, having taken out the short sprint in 2011.
Second favourite is Gerald Ryan’s flying filly Snitzerland ($4.80) who will be running first-up.
The speedy three-year-old was second to Pierro in the 2012 Golden Slipper and has won six off 11 starts.
Just behind her in betting is Joe Pride-trained gelding Tiger Tees who is also kicking off his autumn campaign this weekend.
The tough front-runner is a proven winner, having recorded victory nine times from 16 outings.
Tiger Tees has an excellent first-up record which was shown in the spring when he won the Concorde Stakes by three lengths.
No other runner falls under double figures, with Mrs Onassis the next best at $11.
A stablemate to Snitzerland, the five-year-old mare won the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate at Caulfield last month.
Set to appreciate the lack of a star stablemate is Golden Archer ($15) who was third to Black Caviar in the Lightning Stakes.
There is no shortage of quality in the field and kicking off their autumn campaigns are Group 1 winners Temple Of Boom ($19) and Atomic Force ($26).
Also running in the Challenge Stakes are Howmuchdoyouloveme ($13) and former Golden Slipper runner-up Decision Time ($17).
