Classy 2013 Newcastle Newmarket Handicap Nominations Announced

A classy list of nominations featuring a number of Group 1 winners has been announced for Wednesday’s Group 3 2013 Newcastle Newmarket Handicap (1400m).

Among the top horses included in the 23-horse nominations list are Gai Waterhouse-trained pair Glencadam Gold and Laser Hawk.

Glencadam Gold, who had success at the track in last year’s Newcastle Cup, will have to show quick improvement on an injured foot that saw him finish last in Saturday’s Chipping Norton Stakes.

Last year’s Rosehill Guineas winner Laser Hawk is on the comeback trail from injury, having finished eighth in the Apollo Stakes last month in what was his first start since running third in the 2012 Australian Derby.

Heading the weights with 60.5kg is Chris Waller’s veteran gelding Danleigh who continues to defy his age.

The four-time Group 1 winner may be nine but is still showing plenty of zest for racing, finishing third in both the Group 2 Apollo Stakes and the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes at his past two starts.

Waller has also nominated Magic Millions Cup winner Triple Elegance and 2012 Randwick Guineas runner-up Said Com.

Leading Victorian trainer Peter Moody has entered a rare runner for Newcastle with Italian import Voila Ici set to kick off his autumn campaign.

The grey entire made a decent impact in his first Australian campaign in the autumn, running second in the Group 1 Underwood Stakes and fourth in the Turnbull Stakes.

All Legal will have to bounce back from a first-up failure in the Liverpool City Cup but was a Group 2 winner in December in the Villiers Stakes.

Continuing their road towards the Doncaster Mile is lightly-raced gelding Jacquinot Bay who has won six of seven starts.
