Berry Ripe for Ride on 2013 Golden Slipper Betting Favourite

One of Sydney’s most exciting hoops Tommy Berry could get their chance to win the world’s richest juveniles race this Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival having been confirmed as the jockey for the Gai Waterhouse-trained Golden Slipper 2013 favourite Overreach next race.

Untapped Exceed And Excel filly Overreach hit the top of the markets for the $3.5 million Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m), due to light up Rosehill Racecourse on Saturday April 6, when she returned off a four month break to post a thrilling six length win in the Listed Widden Stakes (1100m).

In that run Overreach beat a number of other promising two-year-olds including Everage (2nd), Brilliant Bisc (3rd) and Sweet Kiss (4th), and also showed nice improvement on her debut second behind one time Golden Slipper favourite Villa Verde in the Listed Inglis Debutants Stakes (1000m) at Caulfield last October.

That win saw Overreach firm into the $4.40 top fancy in the Golden Slipper odds surpassing Inglis Debutants Stakes winner Villa Verde ($7).

Last year Waterhouse scored her incredible fourth Golden Slipper triumph with the Nash Rawiller-ridden Pierro.

But this year Berry will be fighting to be aboard Waterhouse’s best Slipper contender in 2013.

Overreach and Berry will reunite Saturday week when the filly has her final Slipper lead-up in the $300,000 Group 2 Reisling Stakes (1200m), also known as the Reisling Slipper Trial, which Berry is confident she can win having bypassed the Silver Slipper Stakes on March 2.

“I worked with her last Saturday morning and she galloped in outstanding fashion,” Berry said.

“She’s come on since her Widden win and this will have her cherry-ripe for the Slipper.”

Berry is also bullish over their ability to turn the tables on the Shaun Dwyer-trained Bendigo-based Villa Verde who resumes in the Reisling which would help him secure the Golden Slipper ride.

“They’ve got to come to our place and win,” he said.

“Gai’s horses usually improve a bit when they get back to Sydney plus we’ve got the run under the belt.

“My girl is very fit and Villa Verde will need to be on her A-game if she’s going to beat us again.

“The owners (of Overreach) have shown a lot of faith in me so far.

I’m focussed on the Reisling for now. Once we get through that I’ll start thinking about the Slipper.”
