Wall Street Tops Yalumba Golden Mile 2013 Field

This Saturday Bendigo Racecourse has the Saturday meeting in Victoria with a number of lucrative races on the card including the 2013 Yalumba Golden Mile where evergreen veteran stayer Wall Street will lead out a bumper field.

Set to run as Bendigo Race 7 at 3:50pm (AEST) this year’s $150,000 Yalumba Golden Mile (1600m) drew 15 final acceptors with Michael Moroney’s Montjeu eight-year-old Wall Street to carry the 60kg top-weight.

Wall Street has been thereabouts in their three runs this Melbourne Festival of Racing starting with their fourth to All Too Hard in the Group 1 CF Orr Stakes (1400m) as a $41 roughie last month.

From there they went to Kilmore when a brave second behind Dany The Fox before their third to Budriguez in the Group 2 Blamey Stakes (1600m) last Saturday.

This weekend they get their chance to secure not a black-type but a tidy $90,000 first prize when they jump from gate 10 in the Yalumba Golden Mile.

Following Wall Street in the Golden Mile weights are then only two other horses above the 54kg minimum with the Lee & Shannon Hope-trained Folding Gear (57kg) winner of the Naturalism Stakes last spring, and David Hayes’ Cape Cross import Jet Away (54.5kg) racing for the first time in Australia having last been seen finishing second at Haydock Park back in August.

A winner of six of their 16 starts to date Jet Away is being prepared specifically for a spring cups campaign later in the year where the $6.2 million Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) on the first Tuesday of November will be their ultimate aim.

Another import making their Aussie debut in the Golden Mile is then the Robert Hickmott-trained Ranked, the Montjeu four-year-old racing for the first time since June.

Other horses coming off some nice recent form then include David & Scott Brunton’s last start George Adams Stakes runner-up in Tasmania Banca Mo drawn ideally in barrier three, the Danny O’Brien-trained Eraset in gate four, and Blue Ribbon who has the outside gate to overcome.

Some of the other headline races at Bendigo this weekend include the $250,000 Gold Rush (1000m) for two-year-olds, the mares-only $110,000 Gold Bracelet (1400m) where Secret Liaison will shoot for her third win on the trot and the $150,000 Bendigo Guineas (1400m) featuring plenty of smart three-year-olds including Force Command who will appreciate the drop back in class following their ninth in the Australian Guineas last start.
