Progressive gelding Jacquinot Bay will make a trip to Newcastle for the Group 3 2013 Newcastle Newmarket Handicap (1400m) next Wednesday as he continues his journey towards the 2013 Doncaster Mile.
The five-year-old is lightly raced for six wins from seven starts, with trainer Guy Walter taking a patient approach.
Walter said the $125,000 Newcastle feature had been Jacquinot Bay’s agenda since he began his autumn preparation.
“It looks a great race for a progressive horse like Jacquinot Bay, Walter said.
The son of Galileo may have taken some time to mature but has met every challenge he has faced so far.
After four convincing wins at Goulburn to begin his career last winter, Walter brought him to the city where he ran a bold second to Strawberry Boy at Warwick Farm first-up.
He took top honours in the final start of that campaign at Randwick and returned in February to win a BM80 at Warwick Farm.
Jacquinot Bay is currently a $51 chance in the early Doncaster Mile market at bookmaker.com.au.
Favourite to take out the Doncaster is Sydney’s champion three-year-old Pierro who is at $6.50 ahead of fellow star colt All Too Hard.
Three-year-olds dominate the market with Pierro’s stablemate Proisir ($11) occupying the next line of betting ahead of Randwick Guineas favourite Rebel Dane ($13).
Last year’s winner More Joyous is no certainty to defend her title after being allocated 59.5kg but remains a $14 chance in betting.
A large number of horses share the next line of betting at $21 including three-year-old filly Bennetta, Golden Rose winner Epaulette, Adelaide gelding Happy Trails, Group 1-winning mare Secret Admirer and 2012 runner-up Shoot Out.
