Hay List Heads Strong 2013 Challenge Stakes Field

Australia’s number two sprinter Hay List heads a classy 12-horse field for the Group 2 2013 Challenge Stakes (1000m) at Warwick Farm on Saturday.

The seven-year-old has drawn barrier two for what will be his first race since March due to injury.

Despite living in Black Caviar’s shadow for much of his career, Hay List has still managed to win 15 of 23 starts and collect more than $2.5 million in prizemoney.

The big sprinter has won three Group 1s including a super effort to carry 58.5kg to victory in last year’s Newmarket Handicap.

Rosehill trainer Gerald Ryan will have two chances in the $175,000 event, accepting with both Mrs Onassis and Snitzerland.

Mrs Onassis will attempt to back up her Group 1 win in the Oakleigh Plate last month while Snitzerland will be running first-up after an excellent spring campaign that saw her win four of six starts.

Snitzerland is part of a trio of three-year-olds in the Challenge Stakes, joined by Fire Thunderbolt and Single Style.

Despite being a Group 2 race, there is no shortage of Group 1 horses, with Temple Of Boom and Atomic Force joining Mrs Onassis and Hay List as runners to have won in the top grade.

Queensland gelding Temple Of Boom won last year’s Galaxy while Atomic Force won the Galaxy in 2011 and also took out the Railway Stakes in New Zealand last year.

Resuming for Joe Pride is Tiger Tees who has won nine of 16 starts and was fourth in the Group 1 Patinack Farm Classic at the Spring Carnival.

Golden Archer will make the trip from Melbourne and will be out to build on a strong first-up performance where he finished third to famous stablemate Black Caviar in the Lightning Stakes.

Returning for Con Karakatsanis is Howmuchdoyouloveme who has won five of eight starts including the Group 2 Caulfield Sprint in October.

Others in the field are Group 2 winner Second Effort and former Golden Slipper runner-up Decision Time.
