Stepping up to 2040m in the Group 2 2013 Alister Clark Stakes is expected to suit promising colt Philippi at Moonee Valley on Friday night.
The Mick Kent-trained three-year-old has signalled potential with three wins from five starts but has always been pegged by trainer Mick Kent as a horse that will appreciate more distance.
Philippi was sound when finishing fourth in the CS Hayes Stakes and sixth in the Australian Guineas which have provided a solid lead-up to this weekend’s Moonee Valley feature.
“I’ve always thought that 2000m would be a trip that would really suit him so I’m looking forward to him going there on Friday night,” Kent said.
It is son of Host’s second trip to Moonee Valley, having won there over 1500m in just his second career outing.
Kent believes the venue suits his charge who has shown to have a strong finish.
“I think it is a track that suits a horse like him because it has a testing uphill finish,” Kent said.
Philippi will start among the favourites in the seven-horse Alister Clark Stakes field that also features Sheer Talent and Hvasstan.
Mark Kavanagh-trained colt Sheer Talent is coming off an Australian Guineas third after previously winning the Group 3 CS Hayes Stakes.
Victoria Derby fourth placegetter Hvasstan stormed home from last to finish fourth in the Australian Guineas.
The Peter Gelagotis-trained colt will head to Sydney after this weekend’s hit-out to tackle both the Rosehill Guineas (2000m) and the Australian Derby.
Other Alister Clark Stakes contenders include Solider’s March and David Hayes-trained trip Green Roller, Gerontius and Bass Strait.
