Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
The headline race of the weekend is Sydney’s 2013 Randwick Guineas run this year at Warwick Farm Racecourse and a talented 13-horse field has been accepted for the three-year-olds classic.
Due to light-up the track at 4:10pm (AEST) as Warwick Farm Race 6, the $500,000 Group 1 Hyland Race Colours Royal Randwick Guineas (1600m) is shaping up as a beauty this Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival with four previous Group 1 winners in the mix.
Heading the Randwick Guineas field and barriers with the No. 1 saddlecloth and an ideal gate two draw is one of these elite level winners with the Murray Baker-trained Kiwi galloper It’s A Dundeel.
The High Chaparral colt enjoyed a strong first campaign down under during the spring posting four wins on the trot including the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) at Royal Randwick where they beat the likes of Proisir and Honorius.
They were last seen resuming racing at Rosehill when a credible fourth behind Gai Waterhouse’s early Doncaster Mile 2013 betting favourite Pierro in the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) in the mud, an effort they will be out to improve on when stepping up to the mile this weekend on a hopefully firmer track.
Also coming via the Hobartville Stakes are the likes of runner-up Rebel Dane and the third placed Proisir.
Gary Portelli’s California Dane colt Rebel Dane is surely one of the best chances here having won four of their five career starts including a good first-up effort in the Group 2 Royal Sovereign Stakes (1200m) last month.
Their only loss so far came last time out when going down by the narrowest of margins to stablemate Pierro in the Hobartville Stakes.
Proisir meanwhile will also be looking to improve on their Hobartville effort, the Choisir colt having won their last start over the 1600m by six lengths at Newcastle last September before backing up to finish second to It’s A Dundeel in the Spring Champion.
Two other Group 1 New Zealand horses are also in the mix on Saturday with the now Chris Waller-trained duo of Tougher Than Ever and Sacred Falls who have drawn beside each other in gates 10 and nine respectively.
General Nediym colt Tougher Than Ever had their last race in their native NZ when third to new stablemate Sacred Falls in the NZ 2000 Guineas and has been in good form in Sydney when fourth in the Expressway Stakes and second last time out from a wide gate in the Apollo Stakes over 1400m at Warwick Farm.
NZ 2000 Guineas winner Sacred Falls meanwhile has had just the one run down under with the son of O’Reilly finishing fifth to fellow Randwick Guineas rival Rebel Dane in the Royal Sovereign Stakes last month.
The last of the Group 1 winners in the Randwick Guineas line-up this year is then Jim Conlan’s undefeated Pentire colt Ferlax (barrier eight) who will be ridden by Hong Kong-based Brett Prebble as they vie for successive feature race victories following their upset win as a $16 outsider in the Australian Guineas over the Flemington mile on March 2.
Other notable hopes then include the Peter Snowden-trained trio of Tatra, Proverb and Solem.
