Good Ba Ba to Take On Black Caviar in William Reid Stakes 2013

Former Hong Kong hero Good Ba Ba is looking at a tough next up assignment having been confirmed as one of the brave rivals that will take on Black Caviar in the Melbourne Festival of Racing’s final Group 1 race, the 2013 William Reid Stakes under the lights at Moonee Valley on March 22.

Peter Moody’s superlative sprinter Black Caviar will say goodbye to Victorian racing in the $400,000 Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m), an event the fans in Melbourne will flock to see.

One of the courageous horses that will take on the undefeated turf queen is the now Rick Hore-Lacy-trained Lear Fan 11-year-old Good Ba Ba who will use the run as a lead-up into the $2 million Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) at Royal Randwick on April 20.

Unsurprisingly Black Caviar, last seen running away to post her incredible 23rd consecutive career win in the Lightning Stakes on February 16, is dominating the William Reid Stakes odds at an odds-on price of around $1.06.

Good Ba Ba, themselves a seven-time Group 1 winner back in Hong Kong, meanwhile is one of the $151 roughies in the futures markets as the veteran has not won a race since the 2009 Hong Kong Mile.

Having been bought out of retirement at the start of the year, Good Ba Ba has had three runs in Victoria this season.

Their opening two starts showed promise when fourth in both the Group 3 Standish Handicap (1200m) and Listed Kensington Stakes (1000m) at Flemington in January.

They were outclassed over the mile last start however when six lengths away ninth to Budriguez in the Group 3 Carlyon Cup at Caulfield on February 9, an effort that will look to improve on when dropping back to a sprint distance for the William Reid.

“He’s going better than he has since he came to me, he looks great and every indication is that he is feeling good,” Hore-Lacy said.
