Caulfield Home of Zipping Classic 2013

The end of spring showdown named in honour of four time winning grey hero Zipping will this year have a new home with the 2013 Zipping Classic to be conducted at Caulfield Racecourse while the track at Sandown undergoes renovations.

Marking the end of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival each year the highly popular Zipping Classic Day features a crack line-up of black type races including the namesake event, the $350,000 Group 2 Zipping Classic (2400m).

The day’s other headline events then include the $350,000 Group 2 Sandown Guineas (1600m) and the Sandown Cup.

Zipping Classic Day along with a number of other meetings have had to be transferred in 2013 due to a five-month closure at Sandown during which the course proper will be renovated, starting from August 28.

Another track to be upgraded during the year is Ballarat with work to commence after their major Ballarat Cup Day meeting in November.

“Long term the improvement for both Ballarat and Sandown track will be terrific for the industry,” Racing Victoria’s General Manager of Racing Greg Carpenter said.

“We know they’ve had a lot of racing in the last few years so it’s critical that we get them back to exactly where they should be.”

Also announced by Racing Victoria (RV) this week was the official number of overall race meetings to be conducted in the state during the 2013-14 season, the 568 scheduled meetings down eight than this current season.

The breakdown will be 110 metropolitan race days, 424 country meets and 34 picnic meetings as supported by both the Australian Trainers Associations (ATA) and the Victorian Jockeys Association (VJA).

“The ATA and VJA were supportive of the changes on the basis that the reductions would help to address field size issues, particularly in December, and that the total prize money for 2012-13 would not be reduced in 2013-14,” Carpenter said.
