Canberra Results – Criterion Claims 2013 Black Opal Stakes Win

A big weekend of racing in Canberra yesterday March 10, 2013, has resulted in Golden Slipper contender Criterion winning the Listed Black Opal Stakes.

Criterion won the $250,000 Black Opal Stakes by almost half a length in front of Sidestep, who finished second, and Meticulously, who passed the post in third.

The two-year-old was paying odds of $5 to win the 2013 Black Opal Stakes at

Criterion has now won two of his three race starts and has earned more than $205,000 in prize money during his career.

The Sebring colt will now go on towards a run in the $3.5 million Golden Slipper at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse on April 6, 2013.

Trainer David Payne was just relieved to qualify Criterion for the 2013 Golden Slipper and will not dwell on the fact that Black Opal Stakes winners have had a hard time winning the world’s richest two-year-old race in the past.

”I just wanted him to qualify, I don’t care about history and all that,” he said.

”I know the horse is good and history repeats itself … I wanted to qualify and you’ve got to get the money, otherwise you don’t get in.

“Now we can relax and if we don’t want to run him (again before the Slipper), we can gallop him.”

Yesterday’s 2013 Canberra Guineas was won by Complicate, while the 2013 Canberra National Sprint win was claimed by Niblick.

The prestigious Listed Canberra Cup 2013 was clinched by Court Connection, who won the $200,000 race from barrier 11.
