Montsegur Wins 2013 Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes – Flemington Results

Well-backed filly Montsegur justified her favouritism to edge out Bulbula and claim the Group 3 2013 Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes (1200m) at Flemington today.

The Darley-owned galloper jumped a $2.50 favourite and while she gave punters a minor fright she proved too strong in the closing stages down the Flemington straight.

With Craig Williams aboard, the youngster jumped only fairly which caused her to be positioned behind the leaders in a tightly-bunched field.

Williams had to wait until the 300m before a gap opened and the daughter of New Approach responded to take up the challenge to Bulbula.

Bulbula fought gamely and it was only in the final 50m when the favourite gained the upper hand to score a half-length win as Diva Dee took third-place honours.

Paul Snowden, son of trainer Peter, said it was never the plan to race behind horses and was pleased with the way she was able to adapt.

“We probably got behind a couple which we didn’t think was going to happen,” Snowden said.

Williams believes the average start was a blessing in disguise as it allowed the emerging galloper to make the most of her finish.

“We ended up getting put into that position and I couldn’t have been happier,” Williams said.

“It meant that she had to wait and conserve her energy. When she got the run a fair way out she was just going to be too strong and she was today.”

It was the second win from five starts for Montsegur who was sixth in the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes last month.
