Dear Demi confirmed her status as one of the country’s best three-year-old fillies with victory in the Group 2 2013 Surround Stakes (1400m) at Warwick Farm today.
The versatile galloper was too strong for her rivals, powering home down the centre of the track to beat Driefontein and Longport.
A Group 1 winner in the Crown Oaks during the spring, Dear Demi will be given the opportunity to add further top-tier honours to her resume in two weeks in the 2013 Coolmore Classic and in next month’s 2013 Australian Oaks.
Stable representative Marc Conners confirmed the daughter of Dehere will head to the Coolmore Classic and is confident she has the class to match it with the older mares.
“Today she was smothered away in behind them and once she got off her backs she really let down well,” Conners said.
“Very rarely does she ever put a foot wrong. She’ll go to the Coolmore now.”
Jockey Jimmy Cassidy was glowing in his report of the filly he partnered to Group 1 victory in the spring.
“I’m impressed with the way she’s come back. She had a tough campaign winning the Oaks,” Cassidy said.
“I think the rest have got to catch up to her now.”
Cassidy said the winner of more than $1.2 million in prizemoney has come back a stronger horse than the one seen last year.
“She’s got a bigger backside, a bigger engine,” he said.
Short-priced favourite Bennetta never featured in the finish, failing to show the turn of foot that saw her win her three preceding outings.
The $600,000 Coolmore Classic will be held at Rosehill on March 23 while the Australian Oaks will take place at Randwick on April 20.
