Crystal Webb Wins 2013 MSS Security Stakes – Results

The action of Flemington’s Newmarket Handicap Day is well and truly underway with the second having been won by the nicely-priced Crystal Web who improved leaps and bounds on their last start failure at Caulfield to score a tidy win in the $120,000 Listed MSS Security Stakes (1100m).

Prepared by the local training duo of Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra the Hard Spun gelding, a credible fifth in the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes over the mile here during the Melbourne Cup Carnival, resumed racing at Caulfield a fortnight ago but barrier 12 (of 13) saw them caught out when eighth.

It was a different story second-up in the MSS Security Stakes 2013 today however as they were able to get into a good position down the straight with Craig Williams in the saddle.

“It was different today,” co-trainer Ellerton said after the win.

“You’ve just got to have him in his comfort today.

“He got stuck four wide without cover and he never got into the race (last time).

“Going in a straight line today he ran super.

“He was back to 1100 but it was a good effort.”

Looking very comfortable on the outside just off the pace Williams, who also won the opening race with the Peter Snowden-trained Montsegur, let a number of other gallopers do the work early including Lankan Rupee and The Originator who were both up on the speed.

Over the closing 300m Crystal Web made their move out wide racing up the favourite She’s A Fox up the middle of the track who had been easing in the markets all morning for her resuming run, The Rosebud winner at her last run back in August losing steam with the punters.

Crystal Web ($18) kept coming and despite a nice finish by a number of others got there in the end with three quarters of a length to spare over the Peter Moody-trained roughie Flamberge ($26) while She’s A Fox ($3.10) got lost a little racing down the straight for the first time holding on for third one and a quarter off the winner.

There is a chance that Crystal Web, having shown ability in Melbourne, could be taken to Sydney to target either Saturday week’s $500,000 Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) at Warwick Farm or the $500,000 Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) on March 30.

“The plan was to run today and maybe bring him back for the Guineas,” Ellerton said.

“He’s definitely got ability and through knowledge of the family he’ll only get better as he gets older.”
