The big one in Sydney today is the 2013 Chipping Norton Stakes due to jump at 4:20pm (AEST) as Warwick Farm Race 6 and with two live-wire chances in Laser Hawk and Tougher Than Ever both scratched from the field this morning, below we take a look at the updated odds for the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival feature.
The field for the $350,000 Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) is now down to 12 hopefuls with Gai Waterhouse withdrawing her to-be-resuming Rosehill Guineas winner Laser Hawk and Chris Waller dropping his contingent to five with the scratching of expat Kiwi three-year-old Tougher Than Ever.
Laser Hawk was rated a $9 chance in the Chipping Norton Stakes odds while General Nediym colt Tougher Than Ever, likely being saved for Saturday week’s $500,000 Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) back at Warwick Farm, was paying around $13.
The current favourite remains the defending Chipping Norton Stakes winner Shoot Out who is now in from $5 to $4.20 to win the race first-up.
They have the right draw (2) and always run well fresh including the High Chaparral gelding’s Group 1 George Main Stakes victory over the Randwick mile first-up back in September.
Also firming in their price to win this afternoon’s showdown is second elect Manighar ($5.50 into $5), Peter Moody’s triple Group 1 champion from last autumn racing first-up here after an injury enforced spell.
Manighar however now shares the second line of Chipping Norton Stakes betting with the major market mover Silent Achiever who has come right in from $7.50.
There were a couple of queries over Roger James’ NZ Derby winning Kiwi mare earlier in the week with concerns over a possible wet track in Sydney and her inside barrier one draw.
The rain however has stayed away for Chipping Norton Stakes Day with the track currently rated a Good (3) making Silent Achiever’s inside alley very favourable.
The O’Reilly four-year-old was competitive in Sydney as a three-year-old last autumn including her third to Laser Hawk in the Rosehill Guineas and also flew in Melbourne during the spring with a Group 2 win at the Valley over a mile.
Silent Achiever resumed at Ellerslie on February 17 and came within a short half head of victory when carrying a hefty 61kg in a 1400m handicap.
With 57kg today from her nice gate with ace hoop James McDonald in the saddle she has every chance to upset the favourite having matured nicely over the past season.
Havana Rey meanwhile also continues to firm and is now into $12 after paying as much as $17 earlier in the week.
The Bjorn Baker-trained King Cugat gelding comes off back-to-back Warwick Farm wins over the mile, the first on a Good (3) and the latest on February 23 in the mud.
They have versatility, an outstanding four from five record at this track and distance, fitness on their side and the punters’ support.
“He is going so well, he’s got a chance,” Baker said.
“It’s a big ask, no doubt about it, he is going up a few grades, but the horse is in really good order.
“We are the fittest horse in the race, he has a high cruising speed and he’s in top form so we will play to his strengths.
“He loves this track and distance and the way he is going, he will run a good race.”
