Pat Hyland’s progressive mare Bonaria broke an eight month winning drought on Newmarket Handicap Day at Flemington with an upset win over the favourite Spirit Song in the Schweppervescence Trophy 2013.
The second last race of the meeting, the $150,000 Group 3 Schweppervescence Trophy (1600m) was a valuable win for Hyland’s Redoute’s Choice four-year-old who came close when second in the Group 2 Blazer Stakes behind Mosheen from a horror barrier 15 (of 16) draw during the spring at Flemington.
Returning to the track for the first time here, Bonaria was able to add some black type to her record which would have thrilled owner Robert Anderson who is also a known breeder.
“Robert’s a breeder, so to win this sort of race, the money’s one thing but the black type’s another,” a happy Hyland said after the win.
Early in the race Rose Pattern got up on the outside in front of Kasane with the favourite Spirit Song holding down third.
It was a tight finish over the final few hundred metres with a number of live-wire chances including the Aaron Purcell-trained Spirit Song, second in the Group 1 Toorak Handicap over the Caulfield mile last October.
However it was Bonaria ($15) who had been ridden patiently by Tim Clark, back from Hong Kong with a number of good rides including their Newmarket Handicap fourth aboard Undeniably, who got there by a long neck over Spirit Song ($4.80F) with the winners’ barrier one draw making all the difference.
Finishing off the winning Schweppervesence Trophy trifecta in a photo with Spirit Song for the minors was then the John Gunning-trained Hi Belle ($5.50) just a half length off the winner while Peter Moody’s Storm Burst ($10) did well to run a close fourth after getting caught wide throughout.
Hyland was thrilled with the ride from Clark who replaced Craig Williams, winner of the jockey’s challenge here having won the opening four winners of the day, after their unimpressive ninth on Bonaria last start in the Group 3 Mannerism Stakes (1400m) on Blue Diamond Day.
“With all due respect, Craig rode her upside down at Caulfield,” Hyland said.
“(Owner) Robert (Anderson) you can’t put him back on her.
“This boy (Clark) was available so we grabbed him.”
Clark meanwhile was quick to credit Bonaria’s nice draw and powerful finish.
“Obviously this mare drawing barrier one was always going to help her,” he said.
“She did really good to find the line.
“She’s got a good turn of foot but doesn’t want to sprint for a long way so being held up probably helped her in the long run.”
