2013 Kewney Stakes Winner Flying Snitzel Upsets Norzita

Flying hoop Craig Williams secured his fourth win from as many runs on Newmarket Handicap Day with a massive upset with the very impressive smokey Flying Snitzel beating a crack field including Flight Stakes winner Norzita in the A.V. Kewney Stakes 2013.

The three-year-old daughter of Snitzel hadn’t won a race since the Group 3 The Schweppervescence at Rosehill nearly a year ago having been found out by bad gates and the smarter fillies in Sydney.

Today however Flying Snitzel blitzed her rivals in the $220,000 Group 2 TAB Kewney Stakes (1400m) swooping late down the outside to come from the back of the pack and take out the race in an unexpected upset.

Punters had been snapping up the odds-on favourite Norzita from the stables of Bart Cummings after the Group 1 winner resumed with a good win at Moonee Valley two weeks ago.

However she was no match for the winner here.

Norzita jumped just off the leading horses and settled around sixth on the inside allowed to drop back and relax by jockey Steve Arnold.

Last start Angus Armanasco Stakes winner Meliora meanwhile set the pace from Proper Madam, Balaclava Lady and Red Fez in fourth in a beautiful run for Brett Prebble aboard the eventual minor place-getter.

Prebble moved the David Hayes-trained Red Fez, third in the Angus Armanasco, up into the lead on the straight while Arnold held Norzita back for a little longer.

Eventually Norzita ($1.65F) was let go and quickly answered to the challenge put down by Red Fez moving up to hit the front.

The favourite looked to have the Kewney Stakes result in the bag but Williams was poised and got there with Flying Snitzel in a huge win on a beautifully priced outsider.

On the line Flying Snitzel ($16) won by one and three quarter lengths while Red Fez ($14) held on for third a further three quarters of a length away.

Winning trainer Gerald Ryan was thrilled, if not a little surprised, by Flying Snitzel’s dominant Kewney Stakes win.

“I didn’t think she’d beat Norzita,” Ryan admitted.

“We’ve been itching to ride her like that for a long, long time.

“I didn’t expect her to be last and I knew she’d finish off good. She’s a good filly.

“She’s a filly where the ground determines how she goes and she does need a good firm ground underneath her.”

Ryan said they were keen to stay on in Melbourne a little longer while the good weather was there before possibly getting ready for an assault on the major sprints in Adelaide including the $400,000 Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m) at Morphettville on April 24.

“She’s done really well down here, she’s really settled in well,” he said.

“We might stay here while the weather is as it is.

“We’ll look at a run in a mile race at Moonee Valley and might end up heading towards Adelaide.”

Williams was stoked to secure another win at the meeting having won this race back in 2000 aboard Umaline.

“She was brilliant,” he said of Flying Snitzel.

“She went really well even when she got to them she really motored late and went through the line which is great for the future.”
