Peter Moody will look to unearth the latest champion colt when Weinholt jumps favourite in Saturday’s 2013 VRC Sires’ Produce Stakes at Flemington, a race won by subsequent triple Group 1 winner All Too Hard last Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival.
One of the first major support races on the Newmarket Handicap Day on Saturday, this year’s $220,000 Group 2 Henry Bucks Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) is set to run as Race 3 at 1:20pm (AEST) and has drawn a capacity final field.
With so many lightly-raced up-and-comers in the mix uncovering the genuine winning hopes in this two-year-olds’ feature can be a tricky task, the bookies taking no chances with Weinholt who heads the VRC Sires Produce Stakes odds at a quote of $5.
Drawn in barrier nine with the stable’s leading jockey Luke Nolen booked to ride them for the first time the nicely-bred Stratum colt has had two runs to date breaking their maiden status last month with a massive seven length victory over 1200m at Ballarat.
They carried 58kg there and drop back to 56.5kg under the set weights conditions on Saturday, Weinholt looking to improve on their fourth at Flemington on debut back in December.
It is a scramble for the top spots in the Henry Bucks Sires Produce Stakes betting markets with four other single-figure chances with:
- #16 Twilight Royale ($6) – Nice price for Bjorn Baker’s Sydney filly who enjoyed a smashing win in the Mornington Inglis Premier over 1200m last month
- #2 Shamus Award ($7) – Ideal gate three draw for a horse that has been racing well in Melbourne finishing top three in their opening three starts including the Group 3 HKJC Maribyrnong Plate at Flemington during the Melbourne Cup Carnival, comes off a Blue Diamond Stakes fifth and will relish the drop back in class here
- #12 Great Esteem ($7) – David Hayes’ Redoute’s Choice colt must overcome gate 14, has had just the one run to date when fifth in the Talindert here on February 16
- #4 Gamblin’ Guru ($8) – Adelaide galloper over for a shot at the autumn features in Melbourne, debuted at Morphettville two weeks ago and was an easy winner by 2.5 lengths over 1100m
Other notable hopefuls at slightly better odds then include Craig Williams’ mount Rutherglen ($11) in gate two and coming off a win at Newcastle by three lengths over 1300m, the Peter Snowden-trained New Approach colt Parfuri ($11) to be ridden by Brett Prebble and Robert Smerdon’s Street Sense filly Politeness ($11) who should be better after two opening career starts including her last start fourth in the Talindert Stakes at this track.
