If the market is anything to go by, Saturday’s Group 2 2013 Blamey Stakes (1600m) at Flemington is set to be an open affair.
The three favourites all fall between $4.20 and $4.60 and six of the nine runners in the field are under double figures.
Holding slight early favouritism at bookmaker.com.au is Michael Moroney’s veteran gelding Wall Street who is rated a $4.20 chance.
The eight-year-old has resumed in promising fashion this campaign, finishing fourth in the Group 1 CF Orr Stakes and second in the Kilmore Cup.
Just behind him in betting are Mick Price-trained gelding Callanish ($4.60) and 2013 Melbourne Cup favourite Puissance De Lune ($5).
Callanish was unbeaten in the first eight starts of his career but struggled in Group 1 company first-up this autumn in the CF Orr Stakes and arrives on the back of a third-place finish in the Listed TAB Stakes.
The distance may be a touch short of ideal for Puissance De Lune who shot to the top of 2013 Melbourne Cup markets when dominating both the Bendigo Cup and the Group 3 Queen Elizabeth Stakes during the spring.
Following the eight-length and five-length wallopings, leading jockey Glen Boss declared the Shamardal entire a genuine Melbourne Cup contender.
At $7.50 is four-year-old gelding Dany The Fox who took out the Kilmore Cup last start and has won three of his past four starts.
Sharing the next line of betting at $8 are Budriguez and Maluckyday.
Budriguez has been in terrific form of late, scoring third-place honours in the Peter Young Stakes on the back of consecutive victories earlier this year.
Former Melbourne Cup runner-up Maluckyday will appreciate the rise in distance after a solid fifth in the Futurity Stakes (1400m) first-up.
