Black Opal Stakes 2013 – Final Field and Barrier Draw

A capacity field of 14 field horses plus six emergencies has been announced to contest the Listed $250,000 2013 Black Opal Stakes (1200m) at Canberra on Sunday.

The lucrative juvenile feature always attracts a strong field with many trainers using the race in an effort to qualify quality youngsters for the Golden Slipper.

Top Sydney trainer Gai Waterhouse, who has won a remarkable four Golden Slippers, has entered one runner in Mr Jackman.

The Northern Meteor colt has had two starts to date, running third at Gosford on debut in February before finishing fourth at Warwick Farm.

David Payne scratched Criterion from last weekend’s Silver Slipper due to a wide barrier but has suffered poor luck again after his charge came up with barrier 18.

The Sebring colt won at Rosehill on debut in November and was third in his first-up test in the Listed Canonbury Stakes last month.

The field contains just one last start winner, with Shadowofyoursmile stepping up in class after taking out the City Of Lithgow Nugget at Bathurst on February 24.

Darley trainer Peter Snowden has accepted with Exceed And Excel colt Sidestep who will be running for the first time since running third on debut in the Listed Cooper Stakes at Sandown in November.

Also stepping out for Snowden is Aspen who was fourth on debut in the Warwick Farm Plate in December.

Familiar to the track is local hope and last-star Canberra placegetter Meticulously while Tim Martin’s colt Quartzite is rising in class after running second on debut at Wyong last month.

The Black Opal Stakes is also a good race to follow as many of these runners go on to contest bigger two-year-old races at the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.
