Norzita Heads 2013 Kewney Stakes Field & Barriers

Bart Cummings Flight Stakes champion Norzita was the big winner in the Kewney Stakes 2013 barrier draw, the sure-to-be-favourite drawing ideally in gate three for Saturday’s Newmarket Handicap Day showdown at Flemington Racecourse.

The daughter of Thorn Park, winner of the Group 1 Flight Stakes over the Randwick mile last October, is one of 13 three-year-old fillies engaged in this year’s $220,000 Group 2 A.V. Kewney Stakes (1400m) which is a nice lead-up race for future autumn features including the $600,000 Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) in Sydney on March 23.

Having come up trumps with the barrier Norzita looks on track to secure her third win on the trot having won the Listed Typhoon Tracy Stakes (1200m) with ease first-up at Moonee Valley last month.

Also coming via the Typhoon Tracy Stakes is this year’s fourth placed Proper Madam, the Stratum filly having been beaten six lengths by Norzita.

Meanwhile there are four other last-start winners in the Kewney Stakes including the Peter Moody-trained Meliora and David Hayes’ Redoute’s Choice filly Alzora.

Ad Valorem filly Meliora contested her first Group race last start at Caulfield on Blue Diamond Day and easily accounted for a similar field of rivals when putting an impressive 3.5 lengths on Members Joy to win the Group 3 Armanasco Stakes (1400m).

Fifth to Dear Demi in the Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m) on the back of an Ethereal Stakes win last spring, Alzora resumed racing on February 16 and enjoyed a tight win in the Group 3 The Vanity (1400m) an effort she will be looking to repeat when she returns to the track this weekend.

Hayes meanwhile has also accepted for the lightly-raced Red Fez who won her opening two career starts earlier this year before her third behind Meliora and Members joy in the Armanasco Stakes.

Other notable hopefuls include Robert Smerdon’s Armanasco Stakes runner-up Members Joy in gate four with Glen Boss to ride, The Vanity third place-getter Petite Diablesse and the Danny O’Brien-trained Keep De Rose who runs first-up after a Melbourne Cup Carnival win back in early November.
