Moment Of Change Heads Newmarket Handicap Odds 2013

Peter Moody’s Group 1 winning gelding Moment Of Change has opened top of the 2013 Newmarket Handicap final field odds after the smart four-year-old drew ideally in barrier seven for Saturday’s Flemington showcase.

The son of Barley A Moment, winner of the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) last September, goes into the $1 million Group 1 Lexus Newmarket Handicap (1200m) second-up for the season following a brave second behind their undefeated stable mate Black Caviar in the Group 1 Lightning Stakes down the 1000m at Flemington.

They return to the track this weekend and without Black Caviar to reign on their parade are tipped to add another elite level win to their record, Moment Of Change also dropping back from 58.5kg to 56.5kg with their Sir Rupert Clarke winning jockey Luke Nolen back in the saddle.

In the latest Newmarket Handicap odds Moment Of Change is the clear favourite at a quote of $2.70 and firming.

There are just three other runners in the 14-horse Newmarket field and markets under double figures with:

  • #5 Barakey ($5.25) – Undefeated WA raider, winner of the Winterbottom Stakes last start in November, was scratched from the Oakleigh after striking their head on the gates but ready for their intestate debut here where they have a nice weight (56kg) but horror gate (13)
  • #1 Luckygray ($6.50) – Another Perth star looking for success in an Eastern major, dual Group 1 champ last seen taking out the Kingston Town Classic over 1800m, 1200m could be a bit short but first-up the distance could suit as they won the Group 3 Roma Cup first-up over 1200m last May, has the 58kg and barrier 14 to overcome however so no easy feat
  • #13 Better Than Ready ($6.50) – Untapped Kelly Schwida-trained More Than Ready colt travelling over from Brisbane following a sensational three length win in the Falvelon Handicap last start, this is a big step up in class but class they have

Other longer priced hopefuls that could prove a nice value upset bet then include Ortensia ($13) who boasts Group 1 wins in Perth, Dubai and England; and the Anthony Cummings-trained Yellowglen Stakes winner Fontelina ($16) returning after a four month spell.
