Mid Summer Music Returns in Liverpool City Cup 2013 Field

Set to run one race before the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes, this year’s edition of the $125,000 Group 3 Liverpool City Cup (1300m) is shaping up as a crack showdown with nine of the 10 acceptors having their first run of the autumn.

Heading the field with the 59kg topweight is Oamaru Force seven-year-old Mid Summer Music, Group 1 winner of the Stradbroke Handicap last Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival.

She was last seen winning the Listed Kevin Heffernan Stakes over this distance at Sandown back in November and will be ridden by Josh Parr from gate seven for her first-up start.

Moody is hoping Mid Summer Music shows good early form this time in, enough to earn her a shot at the $2 million Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) on April 20 for which she is currently rated around a $67 chance for.

Other notable returning gallopers in the Liverpool City Cup mix include last start Villiers Stakes winner All Legal, the now John O’Shea-trained Bagman to be ridden by James McDonald, Guy Walter’s Super Jet mare Skyerush, the Peter Snowden-trained Scone Cup winner Raspberries and Gai Waterhouse’s Wyong Gold Cup champ Julienas.

Boasting the fitness edge on Saturday meanwhile is the only horse to running first-up here, the Chris Waller-trained Riva De Lago.

After a win at Rosehill in January by 2.5 lengths the Encosta De Lago five-year-old backed up a month later to carry 58kg to victory at the same track and distance (1400m) on February 16, Riva De Lago to relish the drop back to 55kg in the Liverpool City Cup.

Also after their third straight win is then Jason Coyle’s returning Excites four-year-old Scream Machine to be ridden from the far outside barrier with regular rider Kathy O’Hara in the saddle who won back-to-back races at Rosehill over 2000m and 1900m in December.
