Manighar Heads Chipping Norton Stakes 2013 Field & Barriers

Peter Moody’s autumn revelation from last year, Manighar, returns to racing on Saturday vying for their fourth Group 1 victory in the 2013 Chipping Norton Stakes at Warwick Farm.

The imported Linamix grey stole the spotlight last autumn racing carnival winning four of their opening five starts for new trainer Moody including a world-first treble taking out the Australian Cup, Ranvet Stakes and The BMW in Melbourne and Sydney.

Their spring was disappointing however with two failed runs, most recently sixth to Ocean Park in the Underwood Stakes at Caulfield in September after which they were turned out with a knee injury.

A full recovery has occurred between then and now and the seven-year-old will kick off in the $350,000 Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) this weekend ahead of a possible title defense in the $400,000 Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill on March 23.

The Chipping Norton Stakes 2013 field attracted a total of 14 horses this year with acceptances saturated with Chris Waller-trained gallopers, the ace Sydney trainer to saddle up six chances.

Leading Waller’s Chipping Norton contingent this year are the past two winners of the feature with Shoot Out (2012) and veteran miler Danleigh (2011).

Drawn in gate two with Hugh Bowman to ride six-year-old Shoot Out won the race third-up last year before finishing a brave third to Manighar in the Ranvet and second to More Joyous in the Doncaster Mile.

They are first-up this year as they look for back-to-back wins having last been seen running a game fifth to Ocean Park in the iconic Cox Plate in October.

Danleigh meanwhile looks in top form, the rising 10-year-old having had two runs this time in including their close third to upset winner Alma’s Fury in the Group 2 Apollo Stakes in the mud a fortnight ago.

Waller’s other leading Chipping Norton hope is a horse that was originally set to bypass the race in favour of the Randwick Guineas Saturday week, imported Kiwi three-year-old Tougher Than Ever.

Winner of the Group 1 NZ 2000 Guineas over the Riccarton mile last November the General Nediym colt has had two runs for Waller when fourth in the Expressway and then a close second in the Apollo last time out, an effort they are tipped to improve on when getting up to the mile again on Saturday.

Rounding out Waller’s chances of a third consecutive Chipping Norton Stakes trophy are then 2011 Emirates Stakes winner Albert The Fat (barrier 12), Geelong Cup winner Gatewood (barrier three) and exciting stayer Kelinni (barrier 10) who was fourth in the Melbourne Cup last spring.

Also with multiple acceptors is Gai Waterhouse who will saddle up two live wire chances in The Metropolitan winner Glencadam Gold and last autumn’s Rosehill Guineas champ Laser Hawk who have drawn gates 11 and five respectively.

Other notable hopes making for an intriguing Chipping Norton 2013 then include 10-time Group 1 winning Kiwi King Mufhasa last seen running third to All Too Hard in the Futurity Stakes, fellow New Zealand raider Silent Achiever and last start Apollo Stakes winner Alma’s Fury.
