Melbourne Cup winner Green Moon is favourite to add the Group 1 2013 Australian Cup (2000m) to his impressive resume at Flemington this Saturday.
The Lloyd Williams-owned dual Group 1 winner is at $3.50 at bookmaker.com.au to take out the $1 million weight-for-age race after running a solid fourth first-up in the Futurity Stakes.
Second favourite is Perth stayer Mr Moet ($5) who faces a challenging task after drawing the widest barrier in the 13-horse field.
But nobody can deny the Western Australian gelding’s form, having finished third in the Group 1 CF Orr Stakes and second in the Group 2 Peter Young Stakes.
Occupying the third line of betting is Mark Kavanagh’s three-year-old Super Cool ($5.50) who is fresh off a win in the Group 2 Autumn Classic at Caulfield on February 23.
Out to exact revenge on Super Cool will be Victoria Derby winner Fiveandahalfstar ($9) who was run down and had to settle with second in the Autumn Classic.
The pair are beginning to develop a genuine rivalry, with Super Cool finishing second in the Victoria Derby and also finishing behind Fiveandahalfstar earlier this year in the Autumn Stakes.
No other runner falls under double figures, with German import Mawingo the next best at $10.
The Anthony Freedman-trained entire was a close runner-up to All Too Hard in the CF Orr Stakes but must bounce back from a flat second-up fourth in the Peter Young Stakes.
Coming off a strong first-up run is Group 1 winner Glass Harmonium ($11) who fought on gamely to finish second to All Too Hard in the Futurity Stakes.
Out to back up a strong Peter Young Stakes victory is Foreteller who is rated a $12 chance.
Others in the Australian Cup market include Lloyd Williams-owned pair Mourayan ($31) and Tanby ($41) and last-start winner Niconoise ($61).
