Waller’s Strong 2013 Chipping Norton Stakes Presence – Nominations

Sydney’s leading trainer Chris Waller has given himself every chance of claiming a third consecutive title in the Group 1 2013 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) by entering a huge contingent of gallopers.

Waller has nominated eight of his charges for the $350,000 feature and at least five are expected to line up in the final field.

Returning to chase back-to-back Chipping Norton titles is Shoot Out who will be running first-up.

Waller is hoping his stable star can repeat his spring effort where he won the Group 1 George Main Stakes without a lead-up run.

Also shooting for a second Chipping Norton victory is nine-year-old Danleigh who heads into the race on the back of a solid third in the Group 2 Apollo Stakes on February 23.

The BMW-bound Kelinni will be running second-up after a fifth-place Apollo Stakes finish.

Waller is looking for a big campaign from Kelinni who will again be aimed at the Melbourne Cup in the spring after finishing fourth in 2012.

“He’s headed to the BMW. To be competitive in a Melbourne Cup he has to be competitive in the BMW,” Waller said.

Other Waller-trained entrants include British import Gatewood and former Kiwi pair Sacred Falls and Tougher Than Ever.

Outside of Waller’s stable there is no shortage of quality nominations with last year’s autumn star Manighar expected to make his return this weekend.

The Peter Moody-trained import was a triple Group 1 winner during the autumn but had his spring campaign cut short to just two starts due to injury.

Returning from New Zealand for another Australian stint is Roger James‘ talented mare Silent Achiever.

The four-year-old was third in the Rosehill Guineas in the autumn and won the Group 2 Crystal Mile at Moonee Valley during the spring.

Top Sydney trainer Gai Waterhouse has entered two Group 1 winners with Laser Hawk and Glencadam Gold.
