Ace Sydney trainer Chris Waller is likely to acceptor for five of his eight Chipping Norton Stakes 2013 entries in the feature Warwick Farm showdown this Saturday.
Waller has won the past two editions of the $350,000 Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) with Danleigh and then Shoot Out respectively, these two champions among his eight nominations for the 2013 edition of the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival feature.
Veteran nine-year-old Danleigh, coming off a nice third in the Group 2 Apollo Stakes (1400m) on a Heavy (9) track on February 23, and four-time winning six-year-old High Chaparral gelding Shoot Out who resumes racing on Saturday will both be given the chance to secure a second Chipping Norton Stakes.
Their trainer however has ruled out three of his early entries from the classic assigning different autumn targets to crack three-year-old Tougher Than Ever and Sacred Falls who will both go into the $500,000 Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) on March 16, as well as last Saturday’s Group 3 Millie Fox Stakes winner Red Tracer whose new aim is the fillies and mares only $600,000 Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) at Rosehill on March 23.
“Tougher Than Ever and Sacred Falls will probably wait until the Randwick Guineas,” Waller said.
“Red Tracer will be saved for the Coolmore.”
Kiwi expat Tougher Than Ever was one of the top fancies in the futures Chipping Norton Stakes odds after the General Nediym colt ran a close second to upset winner Alma’s Fury in the Apollo Stakes last start.
That was just their second run down under following a first-up fourth to Happy Galaxy in the Expressway Stakes, the former Jason Bridgman-trained youngster a Group 1 winner back in their native New Zealand last autumn.
O’Reilly colt Sacred Falls is another former New Zealand Group 1 winner having won the NZ 2000 Guineas over the mile last November before joining Waller in Sydney with a fifth in the Royal Sovereign Stakes last month in their debut down under.
Joining Waller’s two past Chipping Norton Stakes winners in his quest for a hat-trick in the race are then eight-year-old Magic Albert gelding Albert The Fat looking to improve on their distant ninth in the Apollo, English import Gatewood who will target the Ranvet Stakes – The BMW double this autumn and his eye-catching Melbourne Cup fourth place-getter from the spring Kelinni.
