Pierro Back with Tough 2013 Hobartville Stakes Win

Pierro remains Sydney’s top three-year-old after a tough first-up win over the previously unbeaten Rebel Dane in the Group 2 2013 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) in trying conditions at Rosehill today.

Having his first start since running third in the Cox Plate in October, last season’s champion two-year-old was positioned just behind the speed by regular jockeyNash Rawiller.

Peter Moody’s colt Mulaazem and Pierro’s stablemate Proisir set the early speed but in the final furlong it became a race in two.

Rawiller pulled the triple Group 1 winner to the centre of the track to make his run while Rebel Dane took an inside path under the guidance of Jason Collett.

Pierro had the lead with 100 metres to go and he fought gamely to hang on by a head from Rebel Dane as Proisir took third-place honours.

It was Pierro’s ninth win from 11 starts and trainer Gai Waterhouse was full of typical praise for one of her stable’s biggest stars.

“What an outstanding horse. First-up, 1400 metres, first time without the blinkers on,” Waterhouse said.

“I love the way he was able to settle in the race.

“You don’t have to win by much you just have to win.”

Rawiller admitted to being “pretty worried” during the dying stages but was delighted with the will to win shown by the son of Lonhro.

“I was pretty worried 100 [metres] out,” Rawiller said.

“He hasn’t changed. He’s still got that killer instinct.

“He was running on empty. He’s a bigger, stronger colt I think.”

Waterhouse is yet to reveal the autumn plan for Pierro but likely options include the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas, the Group 1 Randwick Guineas and the Group 1 Doncaster Mile.

Many of these horses will be going on to bigger and better things so remember the form and back winners at great odds at bookmaker.com.au.
