Proisir is Gai Waterhouse’s number two colt, and rightfully so, but the three-year-old will get the chance to upset his high profile stablemate Pierro in the Group 2 2013 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill on Saturday.
On paper their resumes are incomparable.
Pierro has won eight times from 10 starts including three times at Group 1 level and placed in both the Caulfield Guineas and the Cox Plate in the spring.
Proisir has had just five starts for three wins, is yet to win a Group 1 race and was last seen running eighth in the Cox Plate.
On those statistics alone it is little wonder that Pierro is a $1.85 Hobartville Stakes favourite and Proisir occupies the third line of betting at $5.50.
But what records and odds don’t show is improvement and Proisir is likely to have benefited greatly from a lengthy spell in the paddock after his debut campaign.
Pierro however was already well developed during the spring after starring as a juvenile to win the two-year-old triple crown.
It is this that gives Proisir’s jockey Hugh Bowman some reason to be optimistic when taking on one of Australia’s most valuable stallion prospects.
“This horse is probably a little more untapped than Pierro,” Bowman said.
“He’s certainly got the breeding and the constitution to be a topline thoroughbred.”
Bowman will be riding Proisir for the first time with regular jockey Nash Rawiller of course resuming his partnership with Pierro.
The top Sydney jockey knows that Rawiller will always be the first choice rider but said he is happy to take the opportunity whenever the colts clash.
Also out to upset glamour colt Pierro is Gary Portelli’s untapped three-year-old Rebel Dane ($4.50) who is unbeaten from four career starts to date.
