Local Favourite Geegees Blackflash Wins 2013 Launceston Cup

Tasmanian favourite Geegees Blackflash has added another feature race to his resume by winning the Group 3 2013 Launceston Cup (2400m) today.

The six-year-old lugged a big topweight of 59.5kg to produce a storming finish and beat home Lucky Angel and Dream Pedlar by two lengths.

Fellow local The Cleaner set the race up for the chasers by going hard in front for the majority of the race.

As the field began to charge rounding the home turn The Cleaner tired and jockey Peter Mertens called upon Geegees Blackflash.

The popular gallop responded magnificently to amend for a runner-up finish last year and claim his first Launceston Cup title.

Trainer John Luttrell set the son of Clangalang for the race a long time ago and was thrilled to see his favourite horse deliver the result.

“I couldn’t see him getting beaten today. He’s been so good the horse, I’m rapt for him,” Luttrell said.

“Everybody loves him and nobody loves him more than I do.

“He’s been so good in himself.”

The Launceston Cup was previously a stone left unturned for Geegees Blackflash who won last year’s Hobart Cup and has also taken out Tasmania’s Newmarket Handicap and the Tasmanian Derby.

It was a strong performance but he was helped at the 600m mark when race favourite Hurdy Gurdy Man had to be eased down by Glen Boss after bleeding.

It was another impressive run from Lucky Angel who finished fourth in the Hobart Cup at her previous start.

The Launceston Cup may be over for another year but autumn action is just getting started in Sydney and Melbourne and the best odds can be found at bookmaker.com.au!
