Luckygray Heads 2013 Newmarket Handicap Weights

Perth star Luckygray has been allocated topweight of 58kg for Saturday week’s Group 1 2013 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) at Flemington.

The five-year-old grey gelding will be running first-up in the $1 million sprint after a Perth summer campaign where he won the Group 1 Kingston Town Classic and finished second in the Group 1 Railway Stakes.

Three gallopers have been assigned 56.5kg, including early Newmarket favourite Moment Of Change and Group 1 winners Woorim and Ortensia.

Lightly-raced gelding Moment Of Change won the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes during the spring and was second to superstar stablemate Black Caviar first-up in the Lightning Stakes.

If Woorim and Ortensia run in the Newmarket both will have to turn around their first-up form after running 13th and 11th respectively in Saturday’s Group 1 Oakleigh Plate.

No horse has won the prestigious sprint first-up since 1917 but unbeaten Perth sprinter Barakey will be asked to achieve that feat when he carries 56kg in his Melbourne debut.

The five-year-old was a well-backed Oakleigh Plate favourite but was a late scratching after hitting his head when trying to burrow through the barriers.

Oakleigh Plate winner Mrs Onassis will not contest the Newmarket but minor placegetters Facile Tigre (54.5kg) and Spirit Of Boom (55kg) are expected to be given another chance to break through at Group 1 level.

Spirit Of Boom was particularly impressive in the Oakleigh Plate, flying home to grab third and receiving the highest rating performance from the race.

Getting in with just 50.5kg is Queensland colt Better Than Ready who has attracted plenty of hype since demolishing his rivals by three lengths in the Listed Falvelon Handicap at Eagle Farm on Saturday.

The Kelly Schweida-trained galloper has won five of eight starts and broke the 1200m track record at Randwick in October when winning the Listed Brian Crowley Stakes.

The Australian-owned bookie is the best place to back a winner this autumn and are rewarding new customers with a huge $400 bonus bet offer!
