Better Than Ready announced himself as a genuine 2013 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) contender on Saturday when annihilating his competition by three lengths in the Listed 2013 Falvelon Quality (1200m) at Eagle Farm.
Trainer Kelly Schweida has confirmed the Queensland three-year-old will make his Melbourne debut in the $1 million sprint on Saturday week where he will carry just 50.5kg.
Schweida knows it is a big class rise into the Newmarket but is confident his charge will take improvement out of Saturday’s victory.
“He’s still got a fair way to go but at least he’s on an upward spiral,” Schweida said after the race.
“He’s got a great turn of foot and if there’s a race to go for in Melbourne it’s the Newmarket down the straight six.”
The lightly-raced sprinter gave southern racing fans an insight into his ability at Randwick in October when he broke the Randwick track record when winning the Listed Brian Crowley Stakes.
Schweida will be forced to search for a new jockey for the son of More Than Ready as regular rider Rick McMahon cannot make the light weight.
“At this stage I’m not sure who’ll ride him in the Newmarket but I’ll sit down with the owners and discuss it,” Schweida said.
The exciting colt has made a blistering start to his career, winning five of eight starts and recording minor placings on two other occasions.
The Newmarket will be his final start of a brief campaign before he returns to Queensland for a short spell before the Brisbane Winter Carnival.
Schweida said he will enter Better Than Ready for any of the big winter feature sprints provided champion mare Black Caviar isn’t running.
