Charlie Boy To Kick Of 2013 Golden Slipper Campaign

Gerald Ryan’s talented colt Charlie Boy will kick off his 2013 Golden Slipper (1200m) campaign at Rosehill on Saturday when he runs in the Group 2 2013 Silver Slipper Stakes (1100m).

The two-year-old will be having just his second career start after storming on to the scene with a debut victory at Rosehill in November.

He had plenty talking after last Tuesday’s Rosehill trials when he comfortably won a 900-metre workout by 3 1/2 lengths.

Despite having yet to race this autumn, Charlie Boy is equal on the fifth line of Golden Slipper betting with four other horses at $21.

The son of Myboycharlie currently occupies 21st spot in the Golden Slipper order of entry, with 16 spots available in the final field.

Ryan is not getting carried away with his charge’s Slipper chances just yet but is happy with how his preparation has gone to date.

“It’s getting down to the business end now. He is a horse who has handled everything so far,” Ryan said.

Charlie Boy is one of 17 horses nominated for the Sliver Slipper Stakes.

Always a big player at the Sydney Autumn Carnival, Gai Waterhouse has entered two runners, Sweet Idea and Shahad.

Sweet Idea finished second in the Magic Millions Classic at the Gold Coast in January while Shahad was third in her only start to date in the Gimcrack Stakes in October.

Gimcrack Stakes winner Brilliant Bisc has also been nominated after running third to early Golden Slipper favourite Overreeach in the Widden Stakes on February 16.

Other Silver Slipper entrants include unbeaten Queensland gelding Whiskey Allround and David Payne-trained colt Regimental Pride.
