Super Cool Turns Tables on Fiveandahalfstar – Autumn Classic 2013 Results

It was the Victoria Derby quinella in the reverse order at Caulfield today as Super Cool got revenge on Fiveandahalfstar in the Group 2 2013 Autumn Classic (1800m).

Race favourite Fiveandahalfstar jumped to an early lead and was allowed to roll along at a leisurely pace for the majority of the trip as Michael Rodd held Super Cool patiently in fourth position.

As Glenn Boss called on his Victorian Derby winning mount heading into the turn so did Rodd on Super Cool who had plenty of momentum entering the straight.

From there the Fastnet Rock gelding’s turn of foot was too sharp and he headed Fiveandahalfstar at the 100m mark and eventually went on to win by a length as Subiaso trailed in for third.

Kavanagh said the race went as planned for his charge who he knew could defeat the favourite if it wasn’t a genuine staying test.

“Fiveandahalfstar is a terrific horse but he’s a genuine stayer,” Kavanagh said.

“Our horse has got a little bit better turn of foot and he showed that today.”

The Flemington trainer said Super Cool was unlikely to head to the Australian Derby (2400m), suggesting his best distances are likely to be at 2000m or less.

“I think he’s more a 2000m horse,” he said.

Kavanagh hinted that on Super Cool’s spring agenda could be the prestigious 2013 Cox Plate (2040m).

“He’s unbeaten over 2040m at the Valley,” Kavanagh said.

Rodd echoed the thoughts of Kavanagh and is predicting big things from the dual Group 2 winner as he advances in his career.

“I knew I had the best horse in the race at this distance,” Rodd said.

“I thought at this distance my bloke would just be too sharp for Fiveandahalfstar.

“He’s always shown us a lot and I think as time goes on he’ll probably mature and get stronger and I’m very excited about his prospects.”

Many of these horses will be going on to bigger races down the track so remember the form and be sure to take advantage of excellent odds at!
