Mrs Onassis Claims Surprise 2013 Oakleigh Plate Win

She may have flown under the radar in betting but nobody could deny the merit of Mrs Onassis’ performance as she scored the biggest win of her career in the Group 1 2013 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) at Caufield today.

After a delayed start due to drama in the barriers that saw favourite Barakey scratched, the Gerald Ryan-trained mare flew out of the stalls to sit outside the lead of Queenslander Adebisi.

The pair ensured the race was run a hot pace and in the straight when Adebisi dropped off the five-year-old defied her $16 price to hang on for victory ahead of Facile Tigre and Spirit Of Boom.

In scoring her first Group 1 the General Nediym mare confirmed herself as an 1100m specialist as today was the seventh time she has tasted success at the distance.

But she nearly didn’t make it to the start line.

Trainer Gerald Ryan was not convinced until a strong track gallop on Tuesday that the sprinter was ready to run first-up in a tough Group 1 race.

“Two weeks ago we got that wet weather in Sydney and a couple of her gallops were below par,” Ryan said.

“I thought she’s not quite fit enough to come here.

“She worked that well Tuesday morning I thought we’d give it a go.”

Ryan will keep the progressive galloper to 1100m with her next start not likely to come until April 20 in the Group 1 2013 Galaxy at Randwick.

Jockey Kerrin McEvoy was riding Mrs Onassis for the first time and was impressed with what he saw.

“She’s a pretty worthy winner,” McEvoy said.

“She’s got a great sprint record.”

Facile Tigre recorded his second straight minor placing in the Oakleigh Plate after running third last year.
