Meliora Leads All the Way to Win 2013 Armanasco Stakes

Peter Moody-trained filly Meliora produced a strong front-running performance to score a start-to-finish victory in the Group 2 2013 Armanasco Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield today.

With Moody’s number one jockey Luke Nolen aboard, the three-year-old was allowed to roll along at her pleasure out in front as the field quickly strung out.

Heading into the turn Meliora held a three-length lead and showed she is at peak fitness to strongly run out the distance despite the challenges of her rivals.

No matter how hard the competition pushed in the straight they could not get near the daughter of Ad Valorem who claimed the biggest win of her career by 3 1/2 lengths ahead of Member’s Joy and Red Fez.

Moody praised the ride of Nolen and said the race went perfectly to plan after working out the filly’s best racing pattern from her past few starts.

“He rode it beautifully as he does under those circumstances and the filly did the rest,” Moody said.

Nolen admitted the small seven-horse field played into their favour but praised the effort of his mount who had no problems running out a strong 1400m.

“She skipped you know, I let her roll,” Nolen said.

“She’s a fit horse and she did what she did.

“She’s a valuable stud prospect as a result, being a Group 2 win.”

Meliora has now won four of 10 starts and is likely to be aimed at more stakes races of distances around 1400 metres.
