Gai Waterhouse’s The Metropolitan winner Glencadam Gold resumes racing in the Apollo Stakes 2013 at Warwick Farm this Saturday and the exciting stayer has opened top of the odds for the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival feature.
Set to run as Warwick Farm Race 6 at 3:40pm (AEST) this year’s $250,000 Group 2 Schweppes Apollo Stakes (1400m) features a final field of 13 gallopers with imported Refuse To Bend five-year-old Glencadam Gold the early favourite.
Topping the Apollo Stakes odds at a quote of $3.80 the progressive gelding was last seen running a very competitive sixth in the Melbourne Cup and jockey Tommy Berry is confident they are the stayer to beat this time in.
Four length winner of the Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m) at Randwick last October, Glencadam Gold has drawn gate six with Berry in the saddle for Saturday as they look to bring their good trial form to the races first-up.
Glencadam Gold is also topping the futures markets for the $2.25 million Group 1 The BMW (2400m) at Rosehill on April 6 paying $7, a price that is sure to firm if they salute for the punters this weekend.
Following Glencadam Gold in the Apollo Stakes betting markets is then the Chris Waller-trained Chipping Norton Stakes winner Shoot Out ($4.60) drawn one wider in gate seven with Hugh Bowman booked for the ride.
One of an extraordinary six Apollo Stakes acceptors for Waller, High Chaparral gelding Shoot Out resumes racing here having run fifth to Ocean Park in the Cox Plate last time out and they will be out to go one better than their second to Rain Affair in this race 12 months ago.
There are then three other single-figure chances in the latest Apollo Stakes markets with:
- #2 Danleigh ($7) – Waller’s veteran nine-year-old galloper is a genuine old warhorse, resumed with a fifth in the Expressway here on the ninth and will be better second-up having won the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes second-up at this track last prep
- #13 Tougher Than Ever ($7) – Another one for Waller, this young General Nediym colt is full of progression, comes from NZ where they were third in the Group 1 NZ 2000 Guineas and debuted down under with a fourth in the Expressway
- #5 Laser Hawk ($7.50) – Gai Waterhouse-trained Rosehill Guineas winner from last autumn, was on fire last prep before injury saw them miss the spring, hasn’t run since their Australian Derby third but look to have made a full recovery
Other longer priced hopefuls that could prove excellent value on the weekend then include the likes of Waller’s Magic Albert eight-year-old Albert The Fat ($14) and the David Payne-trained Expressway Stakes third placed Centennial Park ($14).
